Dan Dwyer, President of Dwyer Custom Homes, Inc., started remodeling houses in the late 70’s, specializing in restoring and modernizing old adobe houses. He also worked on a rammed earth house in southern Arizona and worked with a straw bale builder. Learning the craft of building from the ground up, he developed a love for environmental design that blends the home with its desert surroundings.
Sustainability, was not a word we used back then, Dan says. “But that’s exactly what were doing.”
He realized that the simple ways of yesterday’s builders can work in this era, and that using certain materials could conserve our resources for future generations. When he was getting started, the energy crisis of the late 70’s and early 80’s was ending, the country started burning more coal than natural gas, and houses were being of wood and stucco with little insulation because energy costs were declining. Very few builders were building with energy savings in mind; it was build as fast as you can with little regard for energy conservation or the environment.
Knowing that history has a tendency to repeat itself, Dan continued to remodel homes with energy conservation in mind, putting as much insulation in the walls as possible and more in the attic than was recommended. He knew that dual pane windows and more efficient AC units cost more to buy but paid for themselves over and over again. He also environmentally designed the landscapes to compliment the homes and aid in conservation of energy and water consumption.
“From overhanging roofs, to the placement of desert trees to provide shade, I have kept the natural desert in mind as we are newcomers to this ancient world, and it should be a partnership of desert and man with building and living in this environment.”
Dan’s college background includes civil & mechanical engineering, land-use design, geology, architecture, construction management and Auto-CAD drafting. A love for playing and coaching sports kept him in the university setting for years.

Coaching college men’s club volleyball and later developing boy’s high school volleyball at Brophy High School in Phoenix. “I’ve been lucky enough to have played with and against some of the best volleyball players in the world, he said. “I watched as the USA men’s team won the Gold Medal in the 1984 Olympics and partied with them moments after the victory.”
When asked how his sports background has affected his business approach, Dan said, “Whether it is building a business or a home, teamwork is the key to success. From a winning volleyball team to an environmentally designed desert home, it takes a team of people to make it happen. Dwyer Custom Homes, Inc. has just that team to build you the best sustainable home we possibly can.”
